Training for Highland Open Water Swims

On Saturday 25th Jan. six club members (Colin, Paul, Alan, Brian, Martine and Stephen T.) headed accross the Corran ferry to join swimmers, kayakers and rescue boats from HOWS for a joint training session. At Resipol we had blustery conditions but better than the forecast and not too bad for January – the swimmers said they didn’t mind! As usual this was quite an interesting learning experience. For example we learnt (no surprise) that a swimmer grabbing hold of a kayak can very easily turn it over; also dealing with a swimmer and trying to summon help is a task for more than 2 hands – so we think kayakers acting as safety cover should pair up. Also we found that the HOWS rescue boat with the drop front needs to pick up a swimmer heading upwind; so what happens if the kayaker is in the way? All this was food for thought and discussion along with the usual soup and cakes catering. Many thanks to all those who took part and to Resipol Camp site.
